Tips for Baby & the Expecting Father

You as the father are in this process together with your wife or significant other.  This process includes sharing the joy, happiness, and even the worries together.  Following are some ideas to keep you as the father involved during the pregnancy.

  • Visit the Obstetrician: Accompany your wife during these monthly checkups.  Doing this simple thing will bring you both closer together and allow you to learn the details of the pregnancyat the same time.
  • Spend Time Choosing Names: This can be a great time to bond with your wife.  Nothing brings the pregnancy to a reality by browsing baby names and meanings.  Be sure to choose names that you both agree on and think will serve your baby for a lifetime.  See our baby names tips page for assistance.
  • Act Pregnant: You as the father don't have to dress in maternity clothes, but there are some things you can do with your wife.  Give up smoking or drinking for 9 months with her, eat the same healthy meals she does.  See our pregnancy-diet page for tips.
  • Get an Education: Attend childbirth classes with your wife to learn what to expect from this exciting process.  You can also talk to other fathers to learn from their experience of being "pregnant".
  • Talk to your wife: This may seem like it's obvious, but sometimes the expecting mother can feel alone in the process.  Simply talking about fears and expectations can draw a couple together.

Your Wife's Looks

The fact is, that your wife will gain some additional weight during the pregnancy.  The important part of this is realizing that this is a natural part of pregnancy, but it doesn't have to be permanent!  Through proper diet and exercise both you and your wife can maintain excellent health during and after the pregnancy.

  • Don't tempt your wife with food: You can't expect her to remain true to her healthy eating habits if you constantly indulge in fried hamburgers, fries, ice cream, etc.  What's good for her and the new baby is good for you also so practice what you preach!
  • Don't be too preachy:  While you can help her stick to her diet and exercise, don't be that nagging voice in her mind every time she opens the refrigerator!  Help her along by taking the initiative in preparing healthy meals and setting the example by your own actions.
  • Accentuate the positive: Make a point of admiring her new pregnant shape and commenting often on how pregnancy becomes her.
